Catriona Macdonald doctorate from Newcastle University

Early day motion 888, tabled 12 October 2026 by Alistair Carmichael (Liberal Democrat). Signed by 5 members.

That this House congratulates Shetland musician Catriona Macdonald on receiving a doctorate from Newcastle University; recognises the distinctiveness of her research into the historical role and experiences of women in Shetland’s traditional fiddle and folk music between 1774 and 1950; notes that her work brought together historical archive research, feminist historiography and creative practice to recover the stories of women whose contributions had previously received limited attention; celebrates Catriona’s contribution to preserving and promoting Shetland’s rich musical heritage; and wishes her every success in her role as Director of Creativity and Impact at Shetland Arts.
