Early day motions
Motions put down by MPs to put a view on record and gather support. Few are ever debated, but who signs them shows where members stand.
Signing an early day motion costs nothing and binds no one: ministers and whips do not sign them, so they mostly show the views of backbenchers. See the glossary. Motions tabled before 1997, and Parliament's own search, are on the official early day motions site.
