Middlesbrough City of Culture

Early day motion 3006, tabled 23 March 2026 by Luke Myer (Labour). Signed by 3 members.

That this House welcomes the longlisting of Middlesbrough for UK City of Culture 2029; recognises the town’s cultural contribution, including the forthcoming Turner Prize, the recent £4.25m investment through the Cultural Development Fund into Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, Middlesbrough Central Library and The Auxiliary, and the rapidly-growing video games and digital sector; notes the town's growing cultural ambition, looking ahead to the tricentenary of Captain James Cook's birth in 2028 and to Middlesbrough's bicentenary in 2030 and 2031; believes that City of Culture status would be a catalyst for increased investment and job creation, helping to bring new life to local arts, tourism and business; applauds the leadership of Mayor Chris Cooke in driving forward a new chapter for Middlesbrough; and expresses strong support for Middlesbrough's bid, recognising its rich history, vibrant creativity, and bright future.
