FOR WOMEN IN SCIENCE AWARDS 2012

Early day motion 2508, tabled 5 December 2011 by Valerie Vaz (Labour). Signed by 31 members.

That this House welcomes the announcement of the winners of the For Women in Science Awards 2012; congratulates Professor Frances Ashcroft of Oxford University, who will be named as a 2012 Laureate for her contribution to science; notes that in 1984 Professor Ashcroft discovered the missing link connecting an increase in the blood sugar level to the secretion of the hormone insulin, the failure of which process leads to diabetes; further notes Professor Ashcroft's subsequent important work with Professor Andrew Hattersley on neonatal diabetes and her work on obesity; acknowledges the significant contributions women make to science; and calls on the Government to support women's particpation in science.
