ARREST OF OPPOSITION LEADERS IN IRAN

Early day motion 1510, tabled 1 March 2011 by Robert Halfon (Conservative). Signed by 22 members.

That this House condemns the reported arrest of Iranian opposition leaders Mirhossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karoubi, who were already held under house arrest; notes that they were apparently moved to the Heshmatiyeh prison in Tehran after both leaders' websites had carried calls for protests in Tehran, and openly resisted the repression and human rights abuses of the Iranian regime; and calls on the British Government urgently to increase the economic sanctions against Iran in line with current sanctions against Libya.

Signatures by party: Labour 7, Liberal Democrat 5, DUP 4, Conservative 2, Scottish National Party 2, Social Democratic and Labour Party 2.
