EXTREME SOLAR WEATHER
Early day motion 1187, tabled 25 March 2009 by Graham Stringer (Labour). Signed by 19 members.
That this House notes that a repeat of the 1859 Carrington event, an ejection of solar plasma, which hit the earth and caused severe disruption to the telegraph system, could knock out the National Grid, which would lead to a loss of water supply, transport and food, and therefore create a national emergency; and calls on the Government to make contingency plans for such an event.
Signatures by party: Labour 14, Conservative 2, Liberal Democrat 2, Social Democratic and Labour Party 1.
