ORANG-UTANS AND PALM OIL

Early day motion 86A2, tabled 15 December 2008 by Rudi Vis (Labour). Signed by 2 members.

leave out from `welcomes' to end and add `deplores the failure of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil to act against members who continue to convert forest lands and peatlands to oil palm plantations; further notes the value of tropical peatlands in protecting rare megafauna such as the orang-utan, and the carbon dioxide emissions when such land is drained to support plantations of any kind; and urges the governments of Indonesia and Malaysia to rescind all licences for new plantations on peatland and implement a moratorium on further forest conversions to monoculture plantations.'.
