KASHMIR CONFLICT AND TRADE RELATIONS

Early day motion 2463, tabled 10 November 2008 by Roger Godsiff (Labour). Signed by 18 members.

That this House records that 27th October 2008 marked the 61st anniversary of the Indian occupation of large areas of the state of Jammu and Kashmir; welcomes recent confidence building measures which have seen a trade agreement between the governments of India and Pakistan allowing the resumption of a modest level of trade along the Jhelum Valley Road and across the line of control; notes, however, that the respective governments have made little progress in settling the core issue at the heart of the Kashmir conflict and recognises that the question of self-determination for the people of Kashmir remains unresolved; and calls on the Government not only to support vigorously the UN resolutions of 1948, 1949 and 1957 which upheld the right of the Kashmiri people to self-determination through a United Nations supervised plebiscite but also to take the lead in raising these matters again in the United Nations.
