BARACK OBAMA AND THE OFFICE OF PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Early day motion 2419, tabled 5 November 2008 by Keith Vaz (Labour). Signed by 83 members.

That this House congratulates Barack Obama on his election as the 44th President of the United States of America; recognises that first and foremost his election is an endorsement of his skills as a leader, an orator and a politician; notes that even a few years ago it would have been unimaginable for an African-American man to run for President let alone win; identifies him as a shining example of how far America has come in respect of integration and equality; welcomes the record level of turnout during this election and its positive impact on democracy; and looks forward to a new era in the relationship between our two countries and the wider world.

Signatures by party: Labour 55, Liberal Democrat 20, Conservative 4, Social Democratic and Labour Party 2, Independent 1, Scottish National Party 1.
