EUROVISION SONG CONTEST

Early day motion 1648, tabled 2 June 2008 by Lindsay Hoyle (Labour). Signed by 18 members.

That this House notes that the 2008 Eurovision song contest marked another occasion in which musical talent was put behind national interest; recognises that millions of pounds are spent on holding the event with taxpayers' money being used to screen another farcical event in which votes cast have little relation to the quality of the music, but are determined by relationships between competing nations; and calls on the BBC to withdraw from contributing to the event and save licence-payers' money until a genuine competition is re-introduced.

Signatures by party: Labour 12, Conservative 3, Liberal Democrat 2, DUP 1.
