BROADBAND SPEED

Early day motion 646, tabled 8 January 2008 by Mark Durkan (Social Democratic and Labour Party). Signed by 48 members.

That this House recognises the importance of broadband speed to businesses and consumers; notes that the up to speeds advertised by broadband providers often vary widely from the actual slower speeds available on a given customer line; welcomes the decision by the independent Ofcom consumer panel to write to the six top UK broadband providers encouraging them to change their sales practices properly to inform customers of their likely connection speed; and calls on Ofcom to ensure that customers have a longer cooling off period to ensure that they are satisfied that their connection speed matches the provider's promise.

Signatures by party: Labour 15, Liberal Democrat 13, Conservative 5, DUP 5, Scottish National Party 4, Plaid Cymru 3, Social Democratic and Labour Party 3.
