EXECUTION OF RIZANA NAFEEK

Early day motion 1927, tabled 17 July 2007 by Keith Vaz (Labour). Signed by 39 members.

That this House views with great concern the case of Rizana Nafeek, a teenage maid from Sri Lanka, facing a public beheading in Saudi Arabia; notes that Ms Nafeek disputes claims that she had admitted to the killing of a four month old baby; further notes that Ms Nafeek was reportedly 17 years old at the time of her arrest and had no lawyer at her trial; calls on the British Government to exert pressure on the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to prevent this execution taking place; and hopes that this and other similar cases do not cause damage to bilateral relations between the governments of the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia.

Signatures by party: Labour 23, Liberal Democrat 9, Conservative 2, DUP 2, Plaid Cymru 1, Scottish National Party 1, Social Democratic and Labour Party 1.
