CLOSURE OF GE LIGHTING FACTORY IN LEICESTER

Early day motion 307, tabled 27 November 2006 by Keith Vaz (Labour). Signed by 25 members.

That this House regrets the announcement by GE Consumer & Industrial Digital Energy that the company plans to close the GE Lighting Factory in Leicester by the end of 2007; notes that the factory employs over 370 highly skilled and dedicated workers; recognises the importance of the factory to the city of Leicester and the 60 year operational history of the site; believes the decision to look to relocate workers to Eastern Europe is a short-sighted and callous decision; further notes the strategic locations and excellent transport links of the site as well as the talented workforce available; and calls on the company to assess properly alternative proposals with a view to keeping the site open.

Signatures by party: Labour 19, Conservative 2, DUP 2, Liberal Democrat 1, Social Democratic and Labour Party 1.
