HELMAND INCURSION

Early day motion 2706, tabled 11 October 2006 by Paul Flynn (Labour). Signed by 8 members.

That this House agrees that the present war of attrition in the Helmand Province could continue for a further 20 years, with grievous loss of life; is appalled by the Karsai government's attempts to buy security by appointing gangsters, drug runners and former Taliban leaders as police chiefs and commanders; and is convinced that no victory can be won in Helmand Province on the battlefield and that the strategy of the Helmand incursion should be re-assessed in order to avert Nato's Vietnam and to safeguard gains made in Afghanistan since 2001.

Signatures by party: Labour 5, Liberal Democrat 2, Plaid Cymru 1.
