FIRST FEMALE VOTES IN THE UNITED KINGDOM
Early day motion 2046, tabled 26 April 2006 by Baroness Burt of Solihull (Liberal Democrat). Signed by 72 members.
That this House celebrates the anniversary of the first general election in which women were enfranchised on the same basis as men on 30th May 1929; notes that there are currently 127 female hon. Members, which represents just under 20 per cent. of the House of Commons, which is still glaringly unequal; further notes that if current trends continue it would take 200 years or 40 general elections to achieve an equal number of women in the House; asks that all political parties do more to prevent sexual discrimination during the election process; and calls on the Government to ensure that remaining structural and institutional barriers to women's participation in politics are removed.
Signatures by party: Liberal Democrat 37, Labour 25, Conservative 2, DUP 2, Plaid Cymru 2, Scottish National Party 2, Social Democratic and Labour Party 2.
