MAYA EVANS

Early day motion 1305, tabled 20 December 2005 by Mark Oaten (Liberal Democrat). Signed by 69 members.

That this House deplores the arrest of Maya Evans at the Cenotaph for publicly reading out the names of British soldiers who have died in Iraq without prior authorisation from the Metropolitan Police; considers that section 132 of the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005 is a fundamental affront to free speech, the right to protest and the traditions of this country; and calls on the Government to repeal the powers at the earliest opportunity.

Signatures by party: Liberal Democrat 44, Conservative 9, Labour 8, DUP 3, Social Democratic and Labour Party 2, Respect 1, Scottish National Party 1, UUP 1.
