GUN CRIME IN BRENT

Early day motion 870, tabled 26 October 2005 by Baroness Teather (Liberal Democrat). Signed by 8 members.

That this House recalls the as yet unsolved murders of Kavian Francis Hopwood, Jahmall Moore, Anton Hyman, Toni Ann Byfield, Bertram Byfield and Troy Robinson, all of whom were murdered with firearms; notes that there have been eight fatal shootings and 12 non-fatal shootings in Brent since 1st September 2004; congratulates the work of the mothers and families of victims of gun crime who have courageously worked on the Not Another Drop campaign; especially congratulates the tireless work of Patsy Hopwood in raising the profile of gun crime issues in Brent; further congratulates the work of the Metropolitan Police and Crime Concern who seek to encourage people to come forward with information about gun crime; congratulates the work of the Willesden and Brent Times in consistently raising awareness of this issue; further notes that the Government promised to set up a national database of all firearms and firearms certificate holders' licensed weapons in 1997 following the Dunblane massacre; also notes that the Home Affairs Select Committee said in 2000 that it was `appalled' that the database had not been set up and that no progress has been made since that report; is also concerned that guns are coming into this country through unguarded ports of entry; and calls upon the Government, for the sake of boroughs such as Brent, to keep its promise and set up the register and establish a national border force to properly police the UK's ports and airports as a matter of urgency.
