ORHAN PAMUK

Early day motion 843, tabled 24 October 2005 by Martin Caton (Labour). Signed by 29 members.

That this House recognises the extraordinary quality of the writing of the Turkish novelist Orhan Pamuk; applauds his courage in speaking about the killing of a million Armenians and 30,000 Kurds in the early part of the twentieth century; is appalled that this has led to his prosecution for the public denigration of Turkish identity; and hopes and expects that commonsense and justice will prevail at his trial set for December 2005.

Signatures by party: Labour 18, Scottish National Party 4, Liberal Democrat 3, Conservative 2, Plaid Cymru 2.
