ATHLETES WITH DOWN'S SYNDROME AT THE PARALYMPICS
Early day motion 674, tabled 21 July 2005 by Baroness May of Maidenhead (Conservative). Signed by 63 members.
That this House commends the success of the British team at the Down's Syndrome World Swimming Championships; notes that at the Paralympics at present, swimmers with Down's Syndrome have to compete in the S14 category for athletes with learning disabilities, which is a wide category that includes people with little physical disability; expresses concern that this creates an uneven playing field; and calls upon the Government to put pressure on the IPC to allow swimmers with Down's Syndrome to compete in a separate category.
