PROVISION OF SMOKE ALARMS IN RENTED PROPERTIES

Early day motion 454, tabled 29 June 2005 by Paul Rowen (Liberal Democrat). Signed by 53 members.

That this House notes with regret the recent tragic death of three young children in a house fire in Rochdale, Greater Manchester and is saddened that although a smoke alarm was fitted, fire officers could find no battery; therefore calls on the Government to make it compulsory for all landlords to fit and regularly check smoke alarms in all their properties; and congratulates the Manchester Evening News in conjunction with the Greater Manchester Fire Service for launching a campaign to ensure that the 200,000 properties in Greater Manchester which currently do not have smoke alarms have one fitted.

Signatures by party: Liberal Democrat 29, Labour 15, DUP 5, Conservative 2, Plaid Cymru 1, Social Democratic and Labour Party 1.
