BRITISH POLLING COUNCIL

Early day motion 407, tabled 16 December 2004 by Barry Sheerman (Labour/Co-operative). Signed by 35 members.

That this House welcomes the launch of the British Polling Council by the UK's largest public opinion research companies; notes that the opinion polling industry has responded to the decline of self-regulation and the need to take action to ensure transparency and honesty in polling and the reporting of opinion polls; welcomes the fact that member companies must make information available on their websites within two days of a survey being published, including details of those who paid for the poll, the sample and interviewing methods used, and full data tables; and hopes that the British Polling Council will be effective in overseeing and enforcing a strict set of disclosure standards relating to published polls.

Signatures by party: Labour 24, Labour/Co-operative 5, Liberal Democrat 4, Conservative 1, DUP 1.
