PETER HANSEN AND UNRWA

Early day motion 562, tabled 20 January 2005 by Neil Gerrard (Labour). Signed by 43 members.

That this House regrets that it appears that Peter Hansen will shortly be leaving his post as Commissioner-General of the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA); recognises the vital work which UNRWA has carried out under his leadership in providing humanitarian assistance to Palestinian refugees across the Middle East and the public stance he has taken to defend the rights of those refugees; is deeply concerned at reports that his reappointment has been blocked as a result of pressure from the US and Israeli governments; and urges the UK Government to take urgent action to support the reappointment of Peter Hansen.

Signatures by party: Labour 29, Liberal Democrat 9, Labour/Co-operative 2, Plaid Cymru 2, Scottish National Party 1.
