THE ODEON, BLOSSOM STREET, YORK

Early day motion 593, tabled 10 February 2004 by Hugh Bayley (Labour). Signed by 31 members.

That this House notes with great concern the threatened closure of the Odean Cinema in York, a listed 1930s cinema famed for its perfectly preserved art deco architecture; notes that the closure of such a classic cinema would be a serious loss to the city's residents and visitors and to York's culture, economy and tourism industry; recognises that this picture house has a special place in cinema history and holds many precious memories for the people of York who would be devastated to see it close; notes that hundreds of York residents have signed a petition to save the cinema; and calls for Odean Cinemas to restore York's last traditional city centre picture house to its former glory and save it from closure.
