THE NET EFFECT REPORT AND BYCATCH FISHING
Early day motion 547, tabled 4 February 2004 by Alan Meale (Labour). Signed by 32 members.
That this House believes that one of the biggest threats to ocean ecosystems is destructive and unsustainable fishing practices, which include the incidental capture, or bycatch of non-target species such as mammals, birds, turtles, fish and other marine species; commends the recent excellent report, The Net Effect, prepared by the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society for the environmental campaign organisation Green Peace; and calls upon the Government to pursue as a matter of policy the strongest possible measures in EU regulations against such wanton and unnecessary destruction.
Signatures by party: Labour 24, Liberal Democrat 4, Labour/Co-operative 2, Plaid Cymru 2.
