ARBROATH SMOKIE

Early day motion 740, tabled 2 March 2004 by Michael Weir (Scottish National Party). Signed by 24 members.

That this House welcomes the granting of protected geographic indication status to the Arbroath smokie; notes that this is the first fish-based Scottish product protected under the scheme, and welcomes the boost this will give both to the Scottish fishing industry and smokie producers in Arbroath; and congratulates everyone involved in the campaign to protect this unique delicacy from imitations and hopes that many other areas will take similar action to protect our unique local and regional foods.

Signatures by party: Labour 8, Liberal Democrat 5, Conservative 3, Plaid Cymru 3, Scottish National Party 2, UUP 2, Labour/Co-operative 1.
