PRESIDENT YASSER ARAFAT

Early day motion 1915, tabled 11 November 2004 by John Austin (Labour). Signed by 45 members.

That this House notes with sadness the death of the Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and extends its condolences to President Arafat's family and the Palestinian people; acknowledges that, to many, President Arafat represented the long-held dream of Palestinian independence; welcomes the recent statements of the Prime Minister, declaring his intentions to resume his efforts to revive the Middle East peace process; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to take all possible measures to ensure the establishment of an independent viable Palestinian state alongside Israel, which would be a fitting legacy to President Arafat and his dream of freedom for his people.

Signatures by party: Labour 30, Liberal Democrat 6, Labour/Co-operative 5, Plaid Cymru 3, Conservative 1.
