HIGH COMMISSIONER TO MAURITIUS

Early day motion 1768, tabled 19 October 2004 by Alex Salmond (Scottish National Party). Signed by 26 members.

That this House condemns the demeaning terms used in a letter from the British High Commissioner to Mauritius to the Chagos Islanders in which he notes that the Islanders should not travel to the UK unless they have adequate funds; denounces his lack of understanding of the levels of destitution and discrimination under which the Islanders live in Mauritius and the UK; affirms that the Islanders should be welcomed to the UK after their homeland was taken from them by the UK Government; and calls upon the Government to recall the High Commissioner.
