WELFARE OF ANIMALS

Early day motion 99, tabled 14 November 2002 by Mike Hancock (Liberal Democrat). Signed by 44 members.

That this House believes that all animals should be treated as sentient beings and is concerned that unacceptable practices where animals are treated as objects still continue; further believes that all animals, at whatever stage of evolution, deserve protection and recognition, welcomes New Zealand's decision to introduce a bill to grant apes certain basic rights; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to improve the welfare and status of all animals in the United Kingdom.

Signatures by party: Labour 33, Liberal Democrat 8, Labour/Co-operative 3.
