FAMINE IN MALAWI

Early day motion 373, tabled 16 December 2002 by Eddie McGrady (Social Democratic and Labour Party). Signed by 48 members.

That this House is deeply disturbed and shocked at the extent of the famine in Malawi and the lack of assistance and aid offered by the international community to those in Malawi affected by this famine; recalls that in February reports of children dying as they waited in government food queues were carried in the national press and have been largely ignored by the international community; and calls on the Government and the countries of the European Union immediately to provide financial aid and food sustenance to the people of Malawi as a matter of urgency.

Signatures by party: Labour 27, Liberal Democrat 5, DUP 4, UUP 4, Social Democratic and Labour Party 3, Labour/Co-operative 2, Plaid Cymru 2, Conservative 1.
