PRESIDENT OF SOUTHERN CYPRUS AND FUTURE AGREEMENT

Early day motion 796, tabled 27 February 2003 by Roy Beggs (UUP). Signed by 6 members.

That this House takes note of the election by the Greek Cypriots of Tassos Papadopoulos as President of Southern Cyprus, recalls that he was a supporter of Milosevic, and was a leading member of EOKA dedicated to the expulsion of the Turkish Cypriots from Cyprus; notes that he is still committed to making Cyprus a Greek island; believes that the concerns voiced by the Turkish Cypriots during the negotiation process are now proved to be genuine and justified; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government and the United Nations to re-evaluate their positions on Cyprus and to treat the two peoples of the island henceforth as separate and equal entities in all respects.

Signatures by party: Conservative 2, Labour 2, Independent Conservative 1, UUP 1.
