RAIL SERVICES IN THE SOUTH WEST OF ENGLAND

Early day motion 739, tabled 13 February 2003 by David Heath (Liberal Democrat). Signed by 11 members.

That this House expresses its deep concern at the lack of investment in rail services in the South West of England and, in particular, the cancellation of the proposed electrification of the line between London Paddington and Bristol, the substantial unmet need for investment in services between London Paddington and Taunton and beyond, and the failure to implement dualling of the track between London Waterloo and Exeter; believes that the travelling public in the West Country are entitled both to efficient long distance services and an effective local transport network; notes that at present Somerset is particularly badly served in both respects; and accordingly urges the Government and the rail authorities to provide resources to improve the railway infrastructure in the South West, encourage the opening and re-opening of stations serving communities on the main line such as Langport, Somerton and Witham Friary, and the provision of enhanced services to stations such as Frome serving substantial communities which are currently grossly underserved.
