UK VETOES ON THE UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL
Early day motion 883, tabled 12 March 2003 by George Galloway (Labour). Signed by 36 members.
That this House notes that UK governments have exercised their right of veto on the UNSC 30 times since 1956; further notes that no fewer than 24 of those were cast in defence of apartheid South Africa and other white minority regimes in southern Africa and another was to block a condemnation of the shooting down of a civilian aircraft in Libya; and calls on the Government to provide guidance on what, in the light of this voting record, constitutes a reasonable use of the veto.
Signatures by party: Labour 27, Liberal Democrat 6, Labour/Co-operative 2, Plaid Cymru 1.
