IRAQ AND THE 1954 HAGUE CONVENTION ON CULTURAL PROPERTY

Early day motion 1245, tabled 19 May 2003 by Simon Thomas (Plaid Cymru). Signed by 41 members.

That this House notes the huge destruction wrought on Iraq's cultural heritage in the aftermath of war; urges the Government to do all it can to clamp down on trade in looted and stolen historic artefacts; notes that the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the event of armed conflict has yet to be ratified by the UK Government; believes it would be appropriate to ratify the convention before its 50th anniversary; and calls on the Government to allocate parliamentary time to call on all parties to assist in ratifying the convention.
