COUP IN CHILE

Early day motion 1667, tabled 10 September 2003 by Jeremy Corbyn (Labour). Signed by 43 members.

That this House notes that on 11th September 1973 the elected government of Chile was overthrown by a military coup and President Allende died in the Moreda Palace; recalls that the coup led by General Pinochet began with strafing of the centre of Santiago by British-built planes and continued with the murder and disappearance of over 7000 people; and regrets that General Pinochet has escaped prosecution and that many victims and their families still await justice for the reign of terror installed with the help of the CIA.

Signatures by party: Labour 34, Liberal Democrat 4, Labour/Co-operative 3, Plaid Cymru 2.
