APPOINTMENT OF ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY

Early day motion 765, tabled 30 January 2002 by John Pugh (Liberal Democrat). Signed by 20 members.

That this House notes the intended resignation of the Archbishop of Canterbury and the controversy surrounding political appointments; regrets that the Prime Minister has to be involved in the appointment of the spiritual leader of the Anglican community; and calls for such legislation as is necessary to make sure that politicians are not by virtue of office involved in the appointment of church leaders.
