HMS DORSETSHIRE

Early day motion 977, tabled 11 March 2002 by Lord Knight of Weymouth (Labour). Signed by 18 members.

That this House congratulates the officers and men of HMS Dorsetshire for their bravery and the fund-raising efforts of the local people in Dorset who, in 1942, raised over £3,057,000 for the building of a new HMS Dorsetshire which was never built; recognises that all three ships played an important role in many battles between 1694 and 1942, and that as a result of her wartime service she was awarded the battle honours, Atlantic 1941 and Bismarck 1941; and, noting these achievements, calls on the Government to give strong consideration to commission one of the next new D Class Type 45 Destroyers HMS Dorsetshire.
