COST OF LIVING FOR TEACHERS IN LONDON AND THE SOUTH EAST

Early day motion 1416, tabled 11 June 2002 by Lord Grayling (Conservative). Signed by 28 members.

That this House recognises the very real problem that headteachers and the teaching profession face as a result of the high cost of living in London and the South East; recognises the validity of the argument behind the current campaign by teaching unions for improved London weighting, whilst not in any way condoning strike action by teachers; notes that the problem is equally acute in counties outside London; and calls on the Government to structure future teachers' pay settlements to achieve a more realistic reflection of the substantial differences in regional living costs.
