LAW LORDS VICTORY FOR ASBESTOS SUFFERERS

Early day motion 1334, tabled 16 May 2002 by Michael Clapham (Labour). Signed by 97 members.

That this House welcomes the House of Lords decision that has reversed the controversial appeal court judgement in the case of Fairchild and others; acknowledges it is a victory for justice and fairness and that thousands of mesothelioma sufferers negligently exposed to asbestos and their families will now be able to obtain compensation; recognises the commitment and determination of UCATT to obtain justice for its members; and calls on the insurance industry to settle cases honourably and expedetiously because they are under public scrutiny.

Signatures by party: Labour 71, Liberal Democrat 12, Labour/Co-operative 8, DUP 2, Scottish National Party 2, UUP 2.
