MANCHESTER COMMONWEALTH GAMES AND RUGBY LEAGUE

Early day motion 1656, tabled 17 July 2002 by Andy Burnham (Labour/Co-operative). Signed by 60 members.

That this House looks forward with great anticipation to the XVIIth Commonwealth Games in Manchester; believes it will be a tremendous celebration of the North West and its strong sporting heritage; expresses disappointment that while Rugby Union is included in the games, Rugby League, a sport holding a proud place in that heritage and played across the Commonwealth, will not feature; and while sending it every good wish for a successful games, asks the Commonwealth Games Federation to consider including Rugby League in the schedule of events for Melbourne 2006.
