AMINA LAWAL

Early day motion 1507, tabled 26 June 2002 by Paul Stinchcombe (Labour). Signed by 84 members.

That this House welcomes the acquittal in Nigeria of Safiya Hussaini, who was condemned to death by stoning for allegedly committing adultery; is gravely concerned, however, that Amina Lawal now faces the same death sentence in Katsina State, Nigeria, for having a child outside marriage; notes that when she was brought before a regional court she had no legal representation; further notes that it is unclear whether the nature of the charge was adequately explained to her; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to take all possible steps urgently to assist Miss Lawal before her appeal hearing on 8th July.

Signatures by party: Labour 53, Liberal Democrat 16, Labour/Co-operative 5, Scottish National Party 3, UUP 3, Conservative 2, Plaid Cymru 2.
