ASDA AND LANCASHIRE FARMERS

Early day motion 337, tabled 1 February 2000 by Colin Pickthall (Labour). Signed by 53 members.

That this House deplores the decision of ASDA effectively to dump the Lancashire area as a supplier of vegetables, removing at a stroke 50 to 70 per cent. of many Lancashire farmers' revenue; equally deplores the nature of the decision, made without warning or discussion with the farmers; and expresses its deep concern that this episode might well presage a more brutal and exploitative approach towards British farmers and growers introduced into the United Kingdom from the USA by Walmart.

Signatures by party: Labour 50, Labour/Co-operative 3.
