UNCHR DEATH PENALTY RESOLUTION

Early day motion 534, tabled 15 March 2000 by Kevin McNamara (Labour). Signed by 118 members.

That this House supports the universal abolition of the death penalty; welcomes the support given by Her Majesty's Government to a strongly-worded resolution on the question of the death penalty at the 1999 UN Commission on Human Rights; believes that a similar resolution should be tabled this year urging all states to abolish the death penalty and fully comply with international law pending abolition; recognises the importance of the Commission as the key UN body on human rights; and calls on the Government to support a strongly-worded resolution, oppose any attempts to weaken the resolution and actively lobby other governments at this year's Commission to do the same.
