RECOGNITION OF BENNY LYNCH, FORMER FLYWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD

Early day motion 451, tabled 29 February 2000 by George Galloway (Labour). Signed by 21 members.

That this House, noting the forthcoming film of the life of Benny Lynch, the Gorbals boy who rose to become the flyweight champion of the world at the age of 22, at Belle Vue, Manchester in 1933 and who died a tragic death just over 10 years later in the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow, expresses the hope that the renewed interest in the life of Benny Lynch will result in long overdue recognition of his greatness, both by Glasgow City Council and the British Boxing Board of Control, which until today has not awarded the Lonsdale belt due to Lynch for his world title victory.

Signatures by party: Labour 17, Labour/Co-operative 2, Liberal Democrat 2.
