KASHMIRIS AS A DISTINCT ETHNIC CATEGORY

Early day motion 335, tabled 16 February 1999 by Marsha Singh (Labour). Signed by 41 members.

That this House believes in the importance of the statistical accuracy of the ten-yearly population census; notes that the information gathered is used to determine the distribution of scarce resources between disparate geographic and ethnic communities; further notes that many local authorities collect ethnicity data on the significant minority communities that live within their jurisdiction; and urges the Office for National Statistics to revise the ethnicity categories for the 2001 census and include Kashmiri as a distinct ethnic group.
