HEAVILY INDEBTED POOR COUNTRIES INITIATIVE REVIEW

Early day motion 308, tabled 10 February 1999 by Kevin McNamara (Labour). Signed by 130 members.

That this House welcomes the success of the Chancellor of the Exchequer in securing a fundamental review of the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries initiative; believes that this review represents a valuable opportunity for a full evaluation of the role and effectiveness of current debt relief policies; and urges the Government to ensure that the review includes a thorough examination of the part that debt relief can play in achieving broader poverty reduction objectives, in particular the OECD target of halving world poverty by the year 2015.
