COMPULSORY FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEMS FOR NEW SUPERMARKETS AND SUPERSTORES

Early day motion 267, tabled 17 July 1997 by Tess Kingham (Labour). Signed by 45 members.

That this House notes that at present it is not compulsory to install fire sprinkler systems in new single-storey supermarkets and superstores; regrets that fire-fighters in Gloucester were put at risk when tackling superstore fires in 1996 where no sprinklers were installed; regrets the loss of life to fire-fighters in other similar fires over past years; and calls upon the Government to consider making the installation of fire sprinkler systems compulsory for all new single-story supermarket and superstore buildings of over 2,000 square metres floor area.
