COASTGUARD STATIONS

Early day motion 1685, tabled 22 October 1998 by Lord Wallace of Tankerness (Liberal Democrat). Signed by 18 members.

That this House welcomes the inquiry by the Transport Sub-committee of the Environment, Transport and Regional Affairs Committee, into the work of the Marine and Coastguard Agency; notes that the Sub-committee will investigate what account is being taken of local circumstances and knowledge in the development of a strategy for the Coastguard Service; believes that local knowledge often plays a primary role in search and rescue activity; and therefore calls on the Government to suspend its decision to shut four coastguard stations at least until such time that the Sub-committee's conclusions can be considered.

Signatures by party: Liberal Democrat 14, Labour 2, Scottish National Party 2.
