AUTOMATED PAYMENT OF BENEFITS AT POST OFFICES

Early day motion 1650, tabled 2 September 1998 by David Rendel (Liberal Democrat). Signed by 26 members.

That this House urges the Government not to abandon the automation of post offices to pay benefits by swipecard; further urges the Government to ensure that the system introduced by ICL is adaptable for other Government services and to deploy this powerful facility against benefit fraud; seeks an acceleration of the timetable to adapt the remaining post offices; and calls on the Government to balance the interests of post offices, especially in rural areas and claimants of social security benefits in achieving the most effective and secure system.
