AGE OF CONSENT

Early day motion 1593, tabled 22 July 1998 by Evan Harris (Liberal Democrat). Signed by 15 members.

That this House notes that it supported the equalisation of the age of consent at 16 by a huge majority on a free vote with all party support; deplores the rejection of that amendment in another place; notes that the Government made a legal agreement to allow this House to express its view on this issue after the European Commission found against the United Kingdom in the Sutherland case; and therefore urges the Government and all honourable Members to do everything in their power to ensure that the will of this House prevails and that the age of consent amendment is included in the Crime and Disorder Bill.

Signatures by party: Labour 10, Liberal Democrat 5.
